2020.09.19 00:35 AlanFreed1951 What is the earliest that the roots of rap music can be traced based on documented evidence as opposed simply to similarity?

Obviously, vocals that emphasize rhythm over melody have been around for a very long time in African-American music traditions (I've heard claims that they even date to the slave trade), but I was wondering how far back you could trace a documented chain of influence upon influence and here's the furthest I've found (using old-school rappers active before the late 1980s only):
Mike D of the Beastie Boys has given credit in interviews to Bob Dylan, referring to him as "one of the first b-boys." Dylan's most rap-like song, Subterranean Homesick Blues, is identified by him as an interpolation of an old Chuck Berry song, Too Much Monkey Business, from 1956. Dylan also mentions "the scat songs of the 1940s" but doesn't actually name any songs or artists, and Gil Scott-Heron also mentions a Muhammad Ali album from the early 1960s as well as a Melvin Van Peebles album (Van Peebles himself mentions Blind Lemon Jefferson as an influence, although afaik Jefferson never got close to rapping).
Too Much Monkey Business
Rudy Ray Moore, described at times as "the godfather of rap" for his vulgar (although generally not rhythmic) rhymes, released several R&B songs in the 1950s and was reportedly an influence on the Last Poets. One of his skits, the Signifying Monkey, is a vulgar take on a folklore character explored in the 1950s by artists including Dave Bartholomew and, again, Chuck Berry.
Here's an example of Rudy Ray Moore's R&B work from the 1950s as compared to Dave Bartholomew's and Chuck Berry's take on the Signifying Monkey (Moore's is too vulgar to repost here but you can google it easily).
So, are there any earlier documented (as in, specifically named songs or artists cited as an influence by first-generation rappers) branches of rap's family tree than these?

2020.09.15 02:02 WhereOceansBleed Mike should write a book

I think we can all agree that Mike is a great storyteller and writer, and he's arguably the most knowledgeable person of the band's history and music.
Plenty of musicians have penned their own autobiographies. How fascinating would it be to hear about Mike's childhood, finding his passion for music, and assembling the most successful band of the twenty-first century? Or how about hearing deeper stories about how every album was produced, and how certain songs or lyrics were written?
All I know is if he or the band in general released something like the Beastie Boys book I would buy it in a heartbeat.

2020.09.09 13:08 Lkj509 [TOMT] What song is this? Possibly by the Beatles.

imgur: synth recording of melody
It sounds like a Beach Boys inspired Beatles track, but isn’t on Help! or a solo John Lennon album. It has the sort of vocalising without lyrics like a beastie boy son, but if I post them it’ll get taken down by AutoMod.
EDIT: the synth I uploaded was mimicking the vocal track

I group all rapping from Gil Scott-Heron onward into hip-hop, including whatever was on that Bernie Worrell album from the 80s.
That stuff did not go mainstream until the late 1980s, and mostly as comedy (Beastie Boys, NWA).
My guess is that if you were born in 1974 or later, you were subjected to it.

2020.09.02 18:00 steelstepladder VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90's Rate!

Intro Please Watch

Remember when VH1 played music retrospectives around the clock? I sure do and I miss it terribly. If you weren't around for the series at it's peak, it's easy to miss how great these specials were. Just by looking at some of their lists at face value the order of the songs could be a little wonky to say the least, even if the spots were chosen by votes. But when you step back from the specifics and look at the big picture, you would get an extremely diverse and thorough crash course into the trends and music of the time. You'd get the indie darlings, the headlining acts, the flashes in the pans, the award winners, and the novelty acts all in one. It's better to not think of their lists as statements of overall quality, but more as the definitive songs that created the soundtrack of the decade. If you don't know much about a particular genre or decade of music, their lists are an incredible first step into discovering so much great music. Me and my lovely cohost u/pearllouise will be hosting this great look into the past where we will be rating their greatest songs of the 90's list! From TRL pop to gangsta rap to grunge it's all here! Throw on some flannel to get into the mood because things are about to get totally tubular!

A brief history of the series

VH1 started their "The Greatest" series in 2002 when they counted down the 100 sexiest artists of all time (number one was Madonna, of course it was Madonna). The early specials were not really what they would be known for as they still had a bit of time before they found their groove. Mostly the earlier episodes would be more along the lines of "50 Greatest Teen Idols" and "100 Most Outrageous Celebrity Moments" and stuff like that. Early "The Greatest" episodes did have their moments like their list of hard rock bands, but when I see people talk about their favorite countdowns I mostly see people bring up the late 2000's episodes. The first decade end retrospective came out in 2006 when the counted down the 100 Greatest Songs of the 80's and this was the first time I stumbled upon the series and I immediately fell in love. The series would continue on this trend with 90's and 00's retrospectives as well as counting down the greatest one hit wonders of both the 80's and the 90's.
Luckily enough for us, somebody was kind enough to upload almost the entire"100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80's" special onto Youtube so if you're curious to see what they were like feel free to check that out. If you don't want to watch, imagine 100 bite sized One Hit Wonderland episodes by Todd in the Shadows and you kind of get the idea. As a matter of fact Todd has mentioned in the past that the specials were influential on his content and the phrase "One Hit Wonderland" is actually mentioned several times throughout the 80's retrospective. Most of the series has unfortunately been lost to time which makes it all the more important that we look back at one of the most popular countdowns they did, and rerank all the songs in Popheads image.

  1. Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet
  2. The Cure - Friday I'm In Love
  3. Foo Fighters - Everlong
  4. Genuwine - Pony
  5. Green Jelly - Three Little Pigs

  7. No Doubt - Just a Girl
  8. Portishead - Glory Box
  9. Pulp - Common People

RULES/INSTRUCTIONS
Here are the rules that I mostly copy and pasted from the disco rate on how to submit scores.
Korn - Freak On a Leash: 3 I prefer my freaks to be free range
That is THE ONLY WAY to properly form comments. Here are some incorrect examples
The Presidents of the United States of America – Peaches 5 Got pears in animal crossing. Still salty
Sinéad O’Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U: I'm giving this song a 2 because there's a 2 in the title
*NSYNC – Tearin Up My Heart: (1) Man of the Woods really tore up my heart JUSTIN

Okay now, here's where things get a little funky so even if you've participated in rates before please read!!!

2020.09.02 02:26 Petrol_Bomb_Perignon How could Beastie Boys' music be in Star Trek?

We saw in Star Trek (2009) a young Jim Kirk stole his stepdad’s care and played “Sabotage” by Beastie Boys. That song is from the 1994 album “Ill Communication”. Cool. It’s classical music by Trek standards. However, in 1994 — in the Trek universe — the Eugenics War was in full swing and it’s highly unlikely that Beastie Boys continued to make music during a near-global conflict. I know Beastie Boys were pretty hardcore but not that hardcore.

It’s the only thing that really bothered me about the Trek reboot films.

2020.08.28 15:46 unfitspaghetti I am in the process of listening to my collection beginning to end in alphabetical order. A surprisingly interesting way to go through the collection.

I wanted to do this because despite having a collection of around 150-200 records, there's probably only 20-30 that are consistently in heavy rotation.
I occasionally buy stupid records from the dollar bin because of the hilarious album covers, so I will have to listen to some awful records. My brother-in-law is an avid collector and typically gives me any duplicate records he has, so there's also a handful of records he gave me that I haven't listened to.
I also find I get into specific genres and ONLY listen to one type of music for months. It's been fun jumping from Beastie Boys to The Beatles to Bjork. I find I will put a record on thinking "I'm not going to enjoy listening to this, I'm not in the mood", and then my brain pretty quickly gets in the mood.
I'm still in the B's, which have been great, except for B.A.D.'s "No. 10, Upping St." I was not a fan, but the BIL likes Mick Jones which is how it ended up in the collection. Listening to all my Beatles records in order was a great spent afternoon.
So, if you're looking for a fresh perspective on your collection, I recommend listening to it this way. It's been surprisingly fun and insightful.
